You've probably heard other authors talk about what an exciting moment it is to finally hold their finished book in their hands. With Modern Patchwork it was almost as exciting for me to get back the boxes of quilts I had sent to my publisher so many months ago. I found that having the stack of quilts back at home really made me want to make some of them again - maybe in dramatically different fabrics or using some of the alternate ideas shown on the mini quilts in the book.
During the next year, I'm going to revisit each of the quilts in Modern Patchwork, highlighting one of the 12 quilts each month. You're welcome to quilt along (or just follow along) with me, starting on Thursday, July 5.

At this point, you should have a finished quilt top and quilt back. Use these pieces to sandwich, quilt, and bind your quilt using your favorite method.

To make the quilt back, you'll need 4 different pieces of solid fabric, each 1-1/4 yards. Each of these pieces will be used to make one quadrant of the quilt back.
Today's post is about how to make the stars. I say make the stars instead of make the blocks because the way this quilt top comes together is a little different than other star quilts you might have seen.
There seemed to be a lot of interest in more specific instructions for making a quilt like the one I made Mo, so I'm going to start the year with a quilt-along!
Step-by-step instructions for designing and making your own Billboard Quilt can be found here. Check out other people's work in the Flickr Pool.
While I love the rainy/overcast weather we usually have in Portland, it makes for difficult quilt photography. I'm hoping to get some better shots of this one eventually but, in the meantime, here it is!
The Billboard Quilt-Along is open to anyone who wants to participate and has no set start or finish date. I’ve compiled a list of posts here.
Finishing your quilt will include three steps: sandwiching, quilting, and binding. This post will include some tips specific to the quilt-along. The links in the previous sentence will take you to more in-depth general tutorials on all three steps.
