It's been hard not showing photos of the construction of this quilt on my blog! This is my Honey in Space quilt, which I made specifically for the QuiltCon show. It measures about 72" x 72".
This is a larger version of my Honey pattern from Modern Patchwork. I called it Honey in Space because of the color scheme which reminds me of outer space and features a lot of Kona Pepper.
The piecing of each hexagon is similar to the "Make it Scrappy" option on Page 85, with 5 block units made with monochromatic print fabrics and 1 block unit made with coordinating solid fabric.
The negative space was created using hexagons with 5 block units made entirely from the negative space fabric and 1 block unit made from a dark blue print fabric. Additional negative space was created by using the negative space fabric as the coordinating solid in the dark blue hexagons.
I quilted this on my home machine using an allover pattern of meandering points. I used Aurifil 50 wt. in white so that the quilting wouldn't detract from the pure white and bright citrus and teal that I used in the piecing. The white quilting also created a kind of overlay that helps to tone down the Pepper background.
The back of the quilt was made using fabric strips leftover from making the block units for the front. The solid background is Kona Steel.
Here's Honey in Space hanging in the show. (We're into phone photos now, so I apologize for the quality.)
I was lucky enough to have several other quilts in the show. Here's Touch This Quilt. (Notice the sign that some jokester posted right next to it. Ha!)
Here's my Drip/Glam Garlands Mashup. (That fold was steamed out before the show opened!)
And here's the Marmalade Quilt/QuiltCon Giveaway quilt.
We're still waiting for photos of the entire show to be available on the new and improved MQG site, but they will be there soon!
Also, if you're interested in the Marmalade Quilt pattern, or any of the other pdf patterns in my shop, the sale continues through Sunday. Just enter MARMALADE at checkout to get 25% off your order of two or more patterns.
