This is part of a year-long series of posts about the quilts from Modern Patchwork. I'm highlighting a different quilt each month, and will be remaking either a regular size or mini quilt version of each of the book quilts.
Last week, I was planning to make the larger Roller Rink quilt, as it's shown in Modern Patchwork. That was still my plan last night, but then I pulled out these gray, black, and linen-colored Echino scraps. I knew right away they were perfect for this project AND perfect for a baby quilt that's on my list to make. So, now I'm making a Roller Rink baby quilt. (This has to happen to quilters other than me, right? I can't tell you how many times I change my mind mid-project!)
This is what the smaller quilt top will look like. It will have 3 rows of 9 blocks (27 total blocks) and will measure 36" x 48". I'm going to wait until I'm finished with the top to decide how I'm going to make the back.
If you want to make a baby quilt top like this, you can use the book instructions with the following changes:
You'll be making 27 blocks - 14 light and 13 dark. These blocks are going to be pieced in a scrappy manner, not the strip piecing used in the main book quilt. You can read more about this and see a mini quilt made this way on Page 23.
FABRIC SQUARES FOR BLOCKS: For a scrappy quilt with 27 blocks, you'll need a total of 189 squares 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" each. For a quilt that looks like mine, you'll need:
- 162 gray and black squares
- 9 red-orange squares (mine are Kona Flame)
- 9 acid yellow squares (mine are Art Gallery Empire Yellow)
- 9 turquoise squares (mine are Kona Turquoise)
LIGHT NEUTRAL SOLID FABRIC: You'll need 5/8 yard at least 42" wide. Follow the same basic cutting directions, but cut only 1 of each size WOF strip, Subcut each strip into 28 pieces in the sizes noted on Page 18. (Ignore the last bullet point about the quilt back.)
DARK NEUTRAL SOLID FABRIC: You'll need 5/8 yard at least 42" wide. Follow the same basic cutting directions, but cut only 1 of each size WOF strip, Subcut each strip into 26 pieces in the sizes noted on Page 18. (Ignore the last bullet point about the quilt back.)
I pulled some additional gray and black prints for my fabric squares.
For my light neutral solid, I'm going to use Kona Oyster, which is one of the new colors that's a creamy white, a little darker than Snow.
For my dark neutral solid, I'm going to use Quilter's Linen in Gray.
I hope to get started with the piecing today and will show you how it's coming along next Thursday.
