This is part of a year-long series of posts about the quilts from Modern Patchwork. I'm highlighting a different quilt each month, and will be remaking either a regular size or mini quilt version of each of the book quilts. You can find my earlier posts about the Baby Roller Rink quilt here and here. The Roller Rink quilt pattern is on Pages 16 - 23 of Modern Patchwork.
I love this finished quilt top! I switched out the Kona Oyster that I had planned to use for the light neutral solid to Kona Ash.
I think the more subtle contrast between the light and dark neutrals
works a lot better with all the prints and color pops in the blocks. Etsuko Furuya's Echino Ni-Co transportation prints look so great in there!
For the quilt back, I thought it would be fun to use a freezer-paper stencil to make a giant airplane.
Freezer paper stenciling is super-easy to do, and you can read more about the process here. The photo above shows my freezer paper stencil ironed onto a piece of Kona Ash.
I filled in the stencil area using Jaquard Neopaque fabric paint, which will hold up to washing and drying of the finished quilt.
And here's the stenciled airplane! I'm going to use this with a bunch of 4-1/2" squares to make the quilt back.
Check back next week to see the finished product!
