My version of the Fiesta Wall Quilt from Quilting Modern
It's such a pleasure to be a part of Jacquie Gering and Katie Pedersen's blog celebration for their new and fabulous book, Quilting Modern.
This book was so much fun to read.
Jacquie and Katie have provided thoughtful and approachable instructions for a variety of improvisationally-pieced quilt projects. The projects in Quilting Modern are simultaneously specific and open-ended, making it possible for quilters to either follow along closely or use the projects as jumping-off points, depending on their preference.
Looking at their projects and reading their instructions, it seemed like Jacquie and Katie had a great time writing this book, and their enthusiasm was contagious!
I was especially drawn to the strip-pieced Fiesta Wall Quilt. You may not be able to tell at first glance, but that block in the middle is only 10" x 10". That's a lot of piecing! I had to try it out.
Here's my version, before quilting. The blue fabric is a Japanese cotton/linen blend from Bolt in Portland. The red and orange solids are Kona Lipstick and Carrot.
The strip-piecing technique used in this project forced me to embrace randomness and chance a little more than I normally would, making it a great challenge for a fussy-cutting enthusiast like me.
The bubble quilting used in the book caught my eye, so I used it to quilt this mini. (It's 24" x 24" finished.) I even went a little crazy and used orange thread.
I used leftover strips from the front to make a pieced strip for the back.
