This is part of a series of posts about my new book, Modern Patchwork. You can read more here.
This is my Fire Drill quilt. The quilt top is made from pieced diamond blocks and half blocks in lots of firey oranges and softer creams and taupes. Despite the bright colors, particularly of the orange solid fabrics, the prints I used for this quilt are fairly delicate. There are several floral and lacey prints in the mix here.
The fabrics I used span a wide range of values, some of which are light enough to blend with the cream background fabric. This pattern could also be made using a tighter palette where all of the block fabrics contrast with the background fabric, creating a dynamic lattice pattern.
This is one of 8 patterns in the book that include alternate instructions for using scrap fabrics, and I think a scrappy version of the Fire Drill pattern would be especially fun if the diamonds were made in a variety of different colors. I envision a quilt like that looking like a bunch of colorful scales. (Animal scales, not scales for weighing!)
The back of the Fire Drill quilt plays with the same angles, but with a single stripey zigzag. If you're thinking of making this quilt in a similar color scheme, but don't want to put quite that much cream on the back, I think a nice rich taupe would look lovely in its place!
I quilted this one using my dogwood pattern. This involved drawing a 2" grid across the entire quilt and then misting it with water (to make the grid go away) before sending the quilt off to be photographed for the book. A tedious process for sure, but I think it was worth it!
And here's a little peek at the Neighborhood quilt. (You might remember the version of this quilt that I made for Violet Craft's booth at Spring Market.)
