This is part of a series of posts about my new book, Modern Patchwork. You can read more here.
Owl Eyes applique and patchwork quilt featuring Shades of Grey prints from Daisy Janie organic fabrics.
I thought that the appliqued ovals on this quilt looked like cartoon animal eyes, hence the name Owl Eyes. I realize, however, that the color scheme may make you think more of hard-boiled eggs. Either way, I love the look of all of those ovals stacked together.
This quilt is a combination of piecing and applique. The ovals are appliques, but the gray background rectangles are pieced amid the white offset sashing. At first glance, you may only see large and small oval shapes, but the pattern actually uses four different oval templates. I designed it this way so that the print and white solid fabrics can be layered with the white always on the bottom (so that no print or darker fabric shows through it).
Several of the quilts in Modern Patchwork use non-square shapes requiring templates. Please don't let that scare you off! All of the templates are on a full-size pattern sheet that's easy to remove from the book and trace. If you prefer thicker acrylic templates, Jill at Tabslot can make one for you.
Owl Eyes quilt back. The mustard print (same one used on the quilt front) is Painter's Canvas by Laura Gunn for Michael Miller.
This is another quilt with some little pops of color on the front and big color explosion on the back. I love the limited color scheme here, but I think this pattern would work well as a scrap quilt, maybe with each block focusing on a different color of ovals.
I tend to like maintaining the same texture across my quilts and quilts with appliques are no exception. I just quilt right over the top of them!
You can see in the above photo that I, once again, used white thread for all of the quilting. If you look really closely, you can also see that I used three different colors (white, gray, and mustard) of thread to sew around the appliqued ovals. My original intention was to use white thread for everything, but I found that matching the thread color to the fabric made the oval shapes look much more crisp.
Before we get to the giveaway, let's peek at one more quilt. Remember the Rapid City quilt back that I showed you on Monday? This is the front of that quilt.
