I’m so excited about all the interest in the Billboard Quilt-Along! The concept of this quilt-along is to make a quilt with patchwork letters that communicate a message. The message can be serious or funny. It can be as long as a phrase, or as short as a couple of letters. It can be any size. It’s up to you!
I wrote about the story behind my quilt here.
The quilt-along will cover designing your quilt top, designing a coordinating back, making and machine appliquéing patchwork letters, putting your quilt together, and finishing it with scrappy binding.
A lot of the time, quilt-alongs are about everyone buying the same amount of fabric and following the same pattern. This one is different. I’m going to walk you through the process of designing your own pattern. I’ll provide lots of helpful hints, but you will ultimately be responsible for calculating fabric yardage and creating the letter templates for your own quilt.
Did I scare anyone off? I hope not, because it’s not as complicated as it sounds! There are no deadlines and no expected finish dates. The tutorials are going to be posted more quickly than most people are likely to finish each step, but I really think it will be helpful for those of you who may not have designed your own pattern before to be able to read ahead and know what to anticipate. In fact, if you’re on the fence, don’t hesitate to wait until all of the tutorials have been posted before jumping in.
Tutorial posts will start on Monday, August 8. Each post will include a “homework assignment” that will tell you what steps should be completed before moving on to the next tutorial. Again, there are no deadlines or expected finish dates. Please complete the steps at your own pace.
