Melanie chose the Far, Far, Away fabric for her Giveaway Day quilt. She asked for a square wall quilt, but said that "anything goes" with regard to design. In looking over the FFA fabric, I decided that the picture parts (unicorns, princesses, frogs, etc.) would definitely need to be fussy cut.
I also tend to think that a little bit of the picture prints goes a long way, so I brought in a bunch of additional fabric. I like the variety they add and I think it also keeps the composition from turning into a non-stop Princess Parade.
I decided to focus on three dominant colors in the Far, Far, Away collection: orange/gold, pink/violet, and green/yellow.
I haven't made a green/yellow block yet, but you can see the fabric I've chosen here.
I'm using my Map of the States technique to make the blocks and I like the way they've turned out so far. Hopefully Melanie will too!

Loving the blocks so far and I think you're right about using the picture prints sparingly! I know Melanie's going to love it!

I LOVE these blocks! I loved them when you did them in green and grey too. Do they take forever with the technique you use?

Thanks!
Making the template is a little fiddly, but it doesnt take a particularly long time to make subsequent blocks once a template is made.

I'm using this pattern right now too! I'm re-doing a quilt I started waaaay back in 8th grade, using leftover fabrics that my mom had made into clothes for me when I was little. It's been a fun pattern! I'll share pictures on my blog when I'm finished.

wow- it's terrific and what a great way to incorporate the FFA fabric with the others- and as you said- not be overkill on the princess theme. would you mind if i played around and did something similar for my daughter? I have been holding to the fabric for awhile trying to figure out what to do and this would be a so fun!

It looks amazing!!! I love this fabric and I have been wondering if I bought it what I could do with it...I am still a bit of a novice! Your choice of colors and patterns looks so great!!!! I may not have won the quilt but I got your expert opinion on a question I have had for a few months now :)
